When automakers present new models, more often than not, the cars sell themselves, but as the years go by and the initial enthusiasm wears down, they have two basic options to boost sales: perform a facelift or make changes to equipment and trim levels. For the VW Polo Mk5 that has been in the market in its current form since 2009, it’s about time for a refresh, but for now, VW is opting for the second approach with the addition of extra equipment and the introduction of a new R-Line Style model in the UK.
The Polo BlueMotion and the Polo Match now come with rear parking sensors, cruise control and an alarm. According to VW, these additional extras are valued at £510, but the price is increased by £135 starting at £11,910 (OTR RRP) for the 1.2-liter 60 PS three-door.
Moving up in the range, the SEL, R-Line, BlueGT and GTI models all now come fitted with cruise control and rear parking sensors as standard, without any increase in price.
A new addition to the lineup is the R-Line Style, which brings the cosmetic enhancements of the R-Line models to the more economical (engine- and equipment-wise) versions of the Polo. In particular, while the regular Polo R-Line comes with a 1.2-liter TSI 105 PS (104bhp) engine, the Polo R-Line Style is offered with either a 1.2-liter 60 PS (59bhp) engine or a 1.2-liter 70 PS (69bhp) unit.
Based on the Polo S equipment trims, prices for the R-Line Style start from £11,740. The package includes bespoke front and rear bumpers, a unique radiator grille, and side skirts, body-coloured door handles and door mirrors, 16-inch ‘Rivazza’ alloy wheels and a Bluetooth touch phone kit.
