Volkswagen has just opened the order books for the seventh-generation version of the Golf GTI, which was first introduced at the Geneva International Motor Show in March, before itheaded to North America for the ongoing New York Auto Show, in the UK where prices start at £25,845 on the road, or £195 more than the previous model.
There are two available editions, the base GTI powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine with 217hp (220PS) that completes the standard 0-62mph (100km/h) sprint in 6.5 seconds and tops out at 152 mph (245km/h), and the GTI Performance with a tweaked version of the same unit delivering 227hp (230PS) that needs 6.4 seconds for the sprint and reaches 250km/h (155 mph).
Both models are equipped with a Stop/Start system and are offered in two body styles (3- and 5-doors), with a standard six-speed manual gearbox or an optional six-speed DSG gearbox, with which they both achieve a fuel consumption figure of 44.1 mpg UK (equivalent to 148 g/km CO2 for the standard GTI and 149 g/km CO2 for the GTI Performance).
The Performance package costs an additional £980 Performance, and aside from the 10hp boost, it also adds uprated brakes and a limited-slip differential.
Standard features for both models include 18-inch wheels shod in 225/45 tyres, 2Zone climate control, sports seats with the classic tartan ‘Jacara’ cloth upholstery, a black roof lining, red ambience lighting, and standard touchscreen infotainment system with DAB digital radio, Bluetooth and iPod connectivity.
