We suspected that the all-new 2014 Cadillac CTS sedan would be one of the five world premieres GM is preparing to bring to the New York Auto Show next week, and now it's official.
While the Detroit carmaker is holding back on the pictures, it confirmed details on the engine lineup, which is highlighted by a brand-new 3.6-liter twin-turbocharged V6 gasoline unit paired to an 8-speed automatic transmission – both a first for the brand.
“The new Cadillac Twin-Turbo brings a new dimension of technologically advanced performance to the all-new 2014 Cadillac CTS sedan,” said David Leone, executive chief engineer. “Delivering power and sophistication, it marks another large step forward in the product-driven expansion of Cadillac.”
The new unit, which makes use of two-small turbochargers rather than a single, larger turbo, is rated at an SAE-certified 420 horsepower (426PS /313kW) and 430 lb.-ft. of torque (583 Nm), making it the most powerful V6 ever from General Motors.
It produces 118 horsepower per liter (88 kW/liter), which GM says is a better power density figure than the BMW 535i's 300hp turbocharged 3.0L six (100hp or 74kW / liter) and the 550i's 400hp twin-turbo 4.4L V8 (91hp or 68kW/liter).
With this engine, which is based on GM's naturally aspirated 3.6-liter V6, and the new 8-speed automatic driving the rear wheels, the 2014 Cadillac CTS can reach 60 mph (96km/h) from a standstill in an estimated 4.6 seconds and top out at 170 mph (274km/h).
At launch, the 2014 CTS will also feature the naturally aspirated 3.6-liter V6 rated at 321 horsepower, as well as a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine delivering an estimated 272 horsepower, both of which can be equipped with AWD as an option.
With the V6 Twin-Turbo and a rear-wheel drive (RWD) setup, the 2014 CTS returns an estimated fuel economy of 17mpg city and 25mpg hwy (highway), while the 2.0-liter Turbo manages 19mpg city and 30mpg hwy with RWD, and 18mpg city and 28mpg hwy when opted with AWD, and the 3.6-liter unit, 19mpg and 28mpg with RWD, and 18mpg and 27mpg with AWD respectively.
